Eating food that's too hot has never been a problem

Don’t worry. This is still a food blog. I just wanted to share that I also think of some things else besides food 🙂
It was a bittersweet moment for the band. Celebrating 15 years in the industry while also saying farewell. This was the last time (at least for now) that all four will be together in an official concert. I’m not a super fan but I absolutely love some of their songs so I just had to watch this. I was with my girlfriend and we also reminisced on the first time we saw Urbandub live, back when we were still not together as a couple and just students of San Beda College.
After almost three hours (including Franco’s set) we were both tired, thirsty, and famished. Now we had to face something dreadful – the dining choices of Metrowalk.
I never did like going to Metrowalk. It’s too crowded, always looks dirty, and food choices are a joke. Places here offer food as an afterthought. It’s offer beer first, then they’ll be too drunk to care about the food anyway so just serve shitty meals. We were so hungry that we immediately went to a place that’s familiar but we haven’t tried before. Thus this review of Icebergs Metrowalk.
Fresh Strawberry Float
We thought when we ordered this that it was going to be fresh strawberry juice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Turned out it was clear soda (probably sprite) with strawberry syrup, a couple of slices of strawberry, and a scoop of ice cream. Should have already set my expectations for what was coming next.
It wasn’t bad but if they’re going to be charging for almost 150 Php they could have at least given more fresh strawberry’s?! Or just drop it to under 100 Php?
Tenderloin Salpicao
Just because it had “Tenderloin” on the name they can charge almost 300 Php for a plate that looks as sad as this? Look at the plating! What’s up with the strips of carrots on the side? To be fancy they also plopped a piece of curly parsley without much thought? Masabi lang, ganun?
If the beef was tenderloin I wouldn’t really know as it was really gummy. Guess it got overcooked? Or is this really beef tenderloin? It had almost the consistency of veggie meat that I used to eat from Bodhi. Yeah, it was that bad!
The taste is bland. You get nothing of that smell of soy sauce and garlic that wafts out of the dish as it is served. Take this off the menu Icebergs Metrowalk! You’re hustling us for extra Pesos without giving quality food!
Ribeye Tapsilog
At least they went true with this one and served as you would typically do for a Filipino breakfast staple. But why slap the word “ribeye” on it and charge a little over 200 Php for it?
The shady reference to ribeye aside, the tapa was actually pretty decent. Not too salty, not as rubbery as the salpicao, a little peppery. I liked it. Although I did get a piece of fat that was almost as big as my spoon and my egg yolk was murdered. But I am still calling out Icebergs for overpricing this tapsilog!
Caramel Flan Con Hielo
I have a quirk when eating halo-halo. I eat the leche flan (or just flan) first before mixing everything together. My thinking was that I’m not going to taste it anymore when I mix it in, might as well eat it now. I love leche flan.
But I didn’t and I was actually happy about it. This dessert is the bomb! four slices of flan, sweet banana, fresh diced mangoes, macapuno, vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, over super fine ice and generous milk? Come on now! I’m not acknowledging the cherry because it was unnecessary.
I finally appreciated flan being mixed in. It made the whole thing creamier and a little tangy. This flan had some lime/orange taste going as well. The mangoes I just super love. If anything I’ll take the bananas out and add more mangoes and flan! And you know what? I couldn’t get the caramel.
Ruminations…
Icebergs is definitely known for their cold desserts, I get that. I also get that they ventured into meals for growth. But why the hell do they overprice us for not-so-good-to-sometimes-crappy food? That salpicao was a joke.
And sorry to ruin your appetites if you’re reading this while eating, but this place had a few friends flying around it.
We got a nice server who was obviously just new as he was not wearing the uniform yet. But one server really irked me. Aside from the two flying friends picture above, there was another one that I was not able to take a picture of for fear it could get in my food. This was the type of friend everybody gets scared of when it decides to go flying. It landed on that same napkin dispenser and the server just took a napkin, squished the thing (while on the dispenser), and just plopped the dispenser back on our table. What the hell?
If you really want something cool during the summer, Icebergs could be a great idea. I would just suggest that you don’t go to the one in Metrowalk. And eat meals somewhere else. That is a lesson I learnt the hard way.
